English

27 Monzencho
Monzencho, literally, town in front of gate, is the community of shopkeepers and other businesses that provide services and financial support for large temples.
Here, the Monzencho community in front of Hongwanji specializes in Buddhist articles, implements, incense, and Japanese sweets catering to Hongwanji priests and members. Also located there are inns, lodging facilities, food services, and other establishments. Hongwanji, which has its beginning in the eastern hills of Kyoto, had to relocate time and again to various locations before eventually settling at its present location. Likewise, the monzencho community followed Hongwanji each time, offering its cooperation and support. As the struggles and battles between feudal clans were taking place, Hongwanji relocated to places including Omi in Shiga prefecture, Yoshizaki in Fukui, and later to Yamashina in Kyoto, attracting thousands of followers along the way. With the Nembutsu movement becoming entangled in violent rioting, Hongwanji then moved to an area that has since flourished into the city of Osaka we have today. These communities that have developed with the temple at its center is the start of the Monzencho communities. Many of the shops in the Monzencho community have long histories because of their association with Hongwanji, and continue to cater to our temples and followers.
